Epitalon (also written Epithalon) is a synthetic tetrapeptide, Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly (AEDG), modeled on a peptide isolated from the pineal gland. It was developed by Vladimir Khavinson and colleagues at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology as part of a broader class of short peptide bioregulators. As one of the smallest bioactive peptides studied for gene-regulatory activity, its distinguishing feature is its investigation as a putative telomerase modulator and epigenetic regulator in cell-culture and animal models of aging, rather than as a conventional receptor ligand.

Mechanism & Research Context

In cell-culture research Epitalon is studied primarily for modulation of telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) activity, assessed by the telomeric repeat amplification protocol (TRAP) assay, and for associated telomere-length dynamics. Additional work examines its proposed epigenetic influence on gene expression and protein synthesis during neurogenesis, regulation of pineal melatonin rhythm, and antioxidant and antimutagenic effects in model organisms studied for lifespan and age-related markers.
